IMPORTANT FERRY INFORMATION
Kennacraig to Islay ferry connections
CalMac operates the ferry route between Kennacraig and Islay. The island has historically been served through Port Ellen and Port Askaig, but infrastructure works can change which port is used.
Current important change: CalMac advises that Port Ellen is closed for harbour works from June 2026, with the Kennacraig service operating to Port Askaig during the closure. Check the latest official information before travelling because port arrangements can change.
Book your ferry separately and follow CalMac’s check-in instructions. Let us know the sailing details so the road transfer can be planned around your required arrival at the terminal.

Kennacraig is the mainland ferry port for CalMac sailings to Islay. Because of road delays and check-in cut-offs, these trips have to be timed strictly around your confirmed sailing rather than a bare minimum driving estimate. With Port Ellen closed for redevelopment until its planned reopening in 2029, all Islay sailings currently run through Port Askaig, meaning sailings and terminal traffic get busy quickly.
Whisky groups heading to Bowmore, Laphroaig, or Ardbeg often carry heavy luggage, tasting boxes, or golf gear. Booking a dedicated 7 or 8-seater gives you the boot space you need and keeps everyone in one vehicle along the A83 past Loch Lomond and the Rest and Be Thankful.
When booking, just send over your ferry time, number of passengers, and luggage details so we can work out a sensible pickup time with plenty of breathing room for check-in. The same private transfers run in the opposite direction from Kennacraig back to Glasgow Airport, city hotels, or home addresses.
Planning Your Glasgow to Kennacraig Ferry Journey
A private transfer provides a direct journey from an agreed Glasgow address towards Kennacraig ferry terminal for Islay sailings. This is particularly useful when a group is travelling with luggage or outdoor equipment and would otherwise need several transport connections. Please give the exact destination address: a rural hotel, ferry port or remote holiday property may be a considerable distance from the named town.
Road and weather conditions can change journey durations, especially on Highland and west-coast routes. Do not rely on an estimated driving time as a guarantee. When your journey connects with a ferry, flight or other timed service, confirm its latest check-in requirement independently and leave suitable margin for delays.
Luggage, Collections and Group Vehicle Options
Tell us the travel date, passenger numbers, full addresses, luggage quantities and any requested stops. For this destination, it is especially helpful to clarify the Islay sailing, operator check-in deadline and island luggage. A detailed enquiry lets the contracted operator identify the correct pickup arrangements and available vehicle.
A saloon may suit a couple travelling lightly, while families and groups may prefer an MPV or 7–8 seater. Large backpacks, walking poles, pushchairs and multiple checked-size cases affect luggage space; do not assume that an eight-passenger vehicle can also take eight large cases. Mention oversized items and any special access needs in advance.
Return Trips, Additional Stops and FAQs
We also handle enquiries for Kennacraig to Glasgow, subject to advance driver and vehicle availability. Multi-stop Highland itineraries can be discussed as a single journey request. Share all stops up front, because the agreed route, waiting arrangements and price depend on what has actually been booked.
Can you collect from Glasgow Airport? Airport collections can be requested. Provide the flight details, arrival date, passenger count and final destination so the collection can be arranged appropriately.
Can eight passengers book one vehicle? A licensed 7–8 seater can be requested, subject to safe luggage capacity and availability for the particular journey.
